Sounds and Noises


In what sounds and noises are different? And various sounds among them? And the same sound produced by different instruments? In the next pages we shall try to answer some of these questions.

Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768-1830)
French mathematician and physicist, was first educated by the Benedictines and later at a military school. He took part into the French Revolution, running the risk to be executed during the Terror, and was saved by the downfall of Robespierre. He then entered the École Normale Supérieure, where was taught, among others, by Joseph-Louis Lagrange e Pierre-Simon Laplace. In 1797 succeeded to the last one as professor in the École Polytechnique. (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia).

The objectives of these activities are:

  • to analyse the features of sound;
  • to build mathematical models of simple sounds;
  • to point out the differences between sound and noise;
  • to understand what the timbre of an instrument is.
  • Using a microphone and a data acquisition system it is possible to record wave shapes in different situations. Some exemplary cases are shown. According to the age of the students also mathematical models of the phenomena can be put forward.
